Strops - Vintage Razors - Honing - Restoration
These are not straight razors, so why am I selling them? Quite simply, I find that they are the best of their type and very useful if you are in a hurry. Both the Fat Boy and the Slim Adjustable ate TTO (Twist To Open) razors that take DE blades and which can be adjusted by means of a rotating collar to give a little more exposure to the blade, resulting in a more aggressive shave. The settings are 1 through to 9, 1 being the least aggressive. Most users experiment to find the ideal setting for their skin type - mine for instance is 3. Before adjusting the setting, slacken off the TTO sleeve a bit, adjust the setting, then re-tighten.
The Fat Boy was the first model to be offered by Gillette, except that it was not known as the 'Fat Boy' then - this is really a slang term for it that has become popular. It was known as the "195 Model" - because it cost the princely sum $1.95 back in 1958!
These razors are easily dated by a letter/number combination on the underside of the head. The letter is a year symbol, and the number (1, 2, 3 or 4) indicates which quarter of the year the razor was made in - 1 for instance meaning January-Febraury-March The Fat Boy was made from 1959 to 1961 and the Slim from 1961 to 1968.
