A range of strop pastes for conditioning and restoring a slightly dull razor to shave-readiness
Guide to selecting a strop paste:
Yellow Paste: a non-abrasive paste, really a strop conditioner. Not necessary for new latigo strops (which are naturally oil-rich) but may be used to condition strops to prevent them drying out and cracking. Traditionally, it consisted of tallow - fat. Neatsfoot oil can be used instead.
White Paste: sometimes called grey paste, for use on the canvas side of a double strop. It helps to fill the gaps in the weave (some old-time barbers used to use a bar of soap to do this) and is slightly abrasive, having a chalk-like substance in it.
Green Paste: contains a coarse abrasive for restoring dull razors. Must be used on a separate strop, your everyday strop will then be used to finish on after wiping the the blade.
Red Paste: not as coarse as the green, used on a razor that is just beginning to dull. Again, it must be used on a separate strop.
Black Paste: contains a very fine abrasive and is really just for bringing the edge to a mirror-like shine. Used on a separate strop. Traditionally it was formulated using carbon-rich soot or ashes.
