3.0" Wide Buffalo Leather & Genuine Linen Hanging Strop
This is a good quality, no-frills no-nonsense solid and reliable strop, hand-made in England from top quality fair-faced buffalo leather. The leather is first rate - it is a very close-grained, even textured and finely surfaced leather - ideal for stropping purposes. The tannage makes for a firm but flexible leather with a slightly waxy look and feel, very similar to latigo. However, the feel of the leather while stropping is much different to latigo - it is not as clinging and makes for a slightly finer edge. This leather requires no breaking in. I use this leather myself and find it excellent - the more it is used the finer it gets!
The leather hardware attachment flap holding the strops together is fixed with unscrewable rivets, allowing it to be taken apart (in case one component becomes damaged) while the handles are securely rivetted to the strop by means of fixed rivets. The edges of the leather strop panel are rounded so that they are less likely to catch the razor. The leather is about 3.5mm thick on average. The handle is made from firm cow-hide which has been comfortably contoured and padded to fit the hand - not a cheap flat stitched handle that you find on most modern strops! The linen side is made from natural fibres that have not been bleached and refined, giving them the edge over cotton if you need a bit more abrasiveness - it is a 100% natural product. The abrasive quality of this natural product - and it's appearance with its herring-bone weave pattern - make it a shame (to my mind!) to paste or coat this part of the strop. The genuine linen is very tough, but looks lightweight when compared to the extra-heavy duty cotton I use in my other 3 inch wide strops. The genuine linen is about 1.5mm thick on average, and because it is made from natural, less-refined product it often has thin wispy fibres protruding from it - these will not affect its performance in any way, however.
The strop is a very good length - from the tip of the hanging gear to the bottom of the handle it measures approx. 33 inches long with a good 19.5 inches of stropping area (as this is a handmade item the actual measurements may vary a little). This strop comes with a swivelling scissor-action hook allowing either side to be used without de-mounting.
The makers logo is embossed into the leather and may be stropped-over without harm to the razor.
This is a heavy strop - the packaged weight will be around 925gms. |
