Vintage "The Raven" Barber Hone This is a vintage barbers hone, made by the celebrated firm of Carl Monkhouse - "C'Mon" is a shortening of the name. They made all sorts of barbers equipment and razors, firstly operating from Germany and then in Ellicotville, NY, USA. They no longer make such items as this - I would guess it dates to the 1940s.
The hone has two sides, coarse (blue) and brown (fine). It has been used and at some time in the recent past it has been lapped flat. It still shows slight signs of use on the surface and has a small chip of no account in the fine side. This type of hone was traditionally used when the razors edge had began to dull - most often only 3 to 5 full laps are required (brown side), with water or shaving lather, before stropping and testing the edge. If a little more maintenance is required then the blue edge is used. I have not used this hone, but I have used other identical C'Mon dual barber hones in the past and they give a reasonably good edge. With the two sides, they make a nice convenient travelling accessory. The hone measures 50mm x 112mm x 10mm / 2.0" x 4.5" x 1/2"). It comes in its original box with the distributors name on it - Peter J Michells, Inc of Calgary, NY. The box has signs of age and wear but is still intact and in no danger of falling to pieces. Packaged weight will be about 350 gms |
